2021
YALE DAY OF SERVICE IN MINNESOTA
The Thirteenth Annual Yale Day of Service was on Saturday, May 8, 2021. YAANW had total participation of 24 alums, family members and guests at two central sites in the Twin Cities area. Due to the COVID pandemic, not all sites for Day of Service around the world were held at the same time, and many were virtual. YAANW supported two sites that were organized for outdoor activities: Wingspan Life Resources and Cedar Lake Park. YAANW has long-standing connections for service to both sites. At both sites, pandemic guidelines were followed.
Cedar Lake Park: YAANW’s volunteers and friends/guests worked outdoors on clearing and lining trails, removing buckthorn and other invasive plant species, general planting, etc. The day’s weather was perfect for such outdoor activity.
Wingspan Life Resources: Volunteers assisted with yard work for one of the homes in Roseville, MN. It is a residential home on an 80 x 300 foot lot for adults with developmental disabilities. Volunteers raked the lawn, picked up sticks and branches, and trimmed growth and swept the deck/patio. Almost 40 bags of leaves were gathered as well as a considerable amount of sticks.
Thank you to all the volunteers who donated time and energy!
2019
YALE DAY OF SERVICE IN MINNESOTA
The Eleventh Annual Yale Day of Service was on Saturday, May 11, 2019. YAANW had total participation of about 50 alums, family members and friends at five central sites in the Twin Cities area. We joined Yale Alumni around the world in providing service to others in our local community. Projects were scheduled for 2-3 hours in the morning and participants attended a potluck lunch following at the home of one of the YAANW board members, Nick Johnson and his wife Lori. There was a wide range of ages represented and it was a great time.
The five sites included:
Feed My Starving Children in Eagan where volunteers hand-packed meals designed especially for undernourished children in developing countries;
Cedar Lake Park Association in Minneapolis where volunteers cleaned up and cleared out the park so it can be used for recreational and educational purposes;
People Serving People which is a Minneapolis homeless shelter and volunteers assisted with general upkeep and maintenance of the shelter;
a Wingspan Life Resources residential home for adults with developmental disabilities in Roseville where we assisted with yard work on a huge 80x300 foot lot picking up sticks and raking leaves (50 bags worth not counting the sticks);
Open Arms Kitchen in Minneapolis where volunteers helped chefs prepare free delivered meals tailored to meet the needs of people living with serious and life-threatening diseases. Kitchen tasks include chopping veggies, packaging soups, scooping dough and assembling meals.
The five sites were, once again, truly appreciative of the work performed. The YAANW has forged strong relationships with the sites over the years. Cedar Lake Park has come to count on the DOS to kick off its seasonal volunteer park management efforts each spring. Many DOS volunteers help out at the sites on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Please watch the monthly YAANW newsletter as opportunities to volunteer together at these and other sites are regularly posted.
